Smackin’ The Piñata Of Life

Smackin’ The Piñata Of Life

There’s a pony hanging from a hook above my desk. It’s small, colorful, and made out of whatever a piñata is made out of. It’s there to remind me of one of life’s most important lessons.

I remember the many birthday parties, rope thrown over a low-hanging branch holding the piñata in position for the kids lined up to take a few swings at in hopes of cracking the thing wide open and spewing candy all over the ground at the base of the tree.

The life lesson?

The candy doesn’t just fall out by itself.

As grown ups, our candy comes in a different form. It takes the shape of our hopes and dreams and aspirations. The things we want to experience and become. The life we want to live. Those hopes and dreams and aspirations are dangling in front of us. But unless we are willing to line up and take consistent swings at the piñata of life all that we want for ourselves will remain within our sights yet out of our reach.

The piñata above my desk reminds me that the life I want to live needs me to show up, to step up, Continue reading “Smackin’ The Piñata Of Life”

When There’s Nothing To Look Forward To

When There’s Nothing To Look Forward To

The future has always been a utopian distraction from the present. The future is where hopes and dreams and aspirations all reside, a perfect escape from the mundane nature of where we can find ourselves right now.

But what if there was nothing to look forward to?

Could I be at peace, at least for a moment, if all there was in my life was that which was already around me?

I’ve been a runner most of my life, running from what was towards what I wanted it to be, only to be consistently disappointed when I got there. Undeterred, I’d then find something else to run toward, convinced that this time would be different while intuitively knowing the disappointment would be waiting for me when I got there.

And it always was.

You can never outrun the present moment, no matter how good you are at running.

When we’re focused solely on the future we do so at the expense of the present. When our Continue reading “When There’s Nothing To Look Forward To”

Perhaps Life’s Most Significant Choice?

Perhaps Life’s Most Significant Choice?

“Energies are contagious. Choose carefully. Your environment becomes you.”

It’s a Sunday tradition.

Meal prep.

I have a love/hate relationship with cooking. I love to cook, and I hate to clean up after I do. Especially when it takes longer to clean up than to actually eat.

A few years back I discovered meal prep. Each Sunday I’ll make a big batch of something and will pre-portion my creation into four matching containers. Lunch for the week is done. Sure, it’s the same lunch four days in a row, but the convenience outweighs any boredom from eating the same thing all week. It’s just one less thing to have to deal with each day.

The preferred protein is grilled chicken, usually marinated with olive oil, lemon juice, and an improvised combination of spices and herbs sort of just thrown in together. Like with any marinade, the longer the chicken soaks in its surroundings the more it becomes what it is soaking in.

It works for chicken.

It also works for humans.

The world around us acts as sort of a human marinade. What we are surrounded by will influence what we become. It will shape our views, opinions, actions, and possibilities. And the longer we soak in Continue reading “Perhaps Life’s Most Significant Choice?”

Or Will You Be Just Another Year Older?

Or Will You Be Just Another Year Older?

One year from today is going to happen.

A lot can happen in the next 365 days. Or, nothing can happen in the next 365 days.

Those hopes and dreams, that big idea, the goals and intentions?

The person you tell yourself you want to become?

Not gonna happen on their own.

Time really doesn’t care what you do with it. It doesn’t care about those hopes and dreams and the person you tell yourself you want to become.

One year from today you can be one year closer to living a life more aligned with your purpose and vision. Or you can remain dormant and wonder where the hell the past year went.

One year from today, will you be more than just another year older?

Maybe You Just Need To Start?

Maybe You Just Need To Start?

Have you ever known the answer, yet remained obsessed with the question?

Getting ready for a recent cross-country flight, my preparations included making sure I’d be entertained as I was to spend several hours miles above the clouds. Usually I’ll find something to read or listen to in the area of spiritual or personal growth. As I looked around my extensive collection of books and scanned my Audible app and my downloaded iTunes podcasts I realized that maybe I didn’t need to acquire more knowledge about becoming all I was created to become.

Maybe I just needed to start.

There’s a level of comfort when you are gathering knowledge. Because when you’re still in the data collection stage it’s perfectly OK not to start. After all, you can’t be expected to paint the Continue reading “Maybe You Just Need To Start?”
