I still have no idea what the song is about.

It’s 1994. The band REM releases it’s new album and the first single is “What’s The Frequency, Kenneth?”. The song title refers to the 1986 assault on CBS News anchor Dan Rather, with one of the assailants repeatedly asking “Kenneth, what is the frequency?” during the attack.

It’s a catchy little tune, with a very interesting backstory, with lyrics which to this day confound me with their meaning.

Despite my decades-long confusion about this song, I find myself at times asking myself the same question posed in this song’s title.

What’s the frequency, Pete?

I think a great deal about frequency. The frequency I am putting out into the world in terms of my energy and the corresponding vibrations which come along with it. Because I know that whatever I’m putting out into the world more of it will find its way back to me.

There is frequency in our thoughts. There is frequency in our emotions. There is frequency in our expectations. And the magnetic nature of the Universe will obediently and consistently bring us more of what is contained in our truest thoughts, emotions, and expectations. Even if we don’t really want them.

But it all starts with frequency.

For most of my life I never contemplated things like frequency and energy. I spent all of my time dealing with what the world had thrown on me, oblivious that on some level I was some sort of co-creator of the life I was experiencing. I managed what was in front of me, what life had given me, and the only frequency and energy which came with that was the frustration and angst which simply created more of it.

Asking “what’s the frequency, Pete?” is my opportunity to check in with me, to evaluate my thoughts, emotions, and expectations in a given moment. What am I putting out into the world, and if I don’t like what that is what can I do to change it? But in order to change what is you need to first understand what is.

Life doesn’t care what kind of energy and intention we decide to bring to it. Proactive or reactive, expansive or contracting, life will simply support the vibrations and frequencies we offer to the world.

It all starts with frequency.

What’s your frequency? What are you truly thinking and feeling and expecting?

More of that is on the way.
