Greatness isn’t what it used to be.
Not in my book, anyway.
The traditional interpretation of greatness has always relied on an external comparison component. You know, the you’re-better-than-me she’s-better-than-her evaluative comparison stuff. Only through comparison can something be considered greater than something else.
Without the comparison, there is just is. If Mount Everest was the only mountain in the world, would anyone refer to it as being the tallest? No. It would just be a mountain. It needs lesser mountains around it to claim its greatness.
YOUR VALUE When I look at greatness in the human context it is not based upon any external comparison. How can you, as unique and individual as only you can be, possibly be compared to others who possess completely different sets of talents, gifts, and abilities?
Your value to this world is not determined by comparisons to others. Don’t ever let anyone convince you otherwise.
Greatness, to me, is something all of us already are. Take a deep, honest look at all that you are capable of. Remember times of great inspiration when you achieved at levels that even you didn’t think you were capable of? That was the real you living up to your greatness.
That greatness is still inside…waiting to be rediscovered.
Here are three simple steps to extract your innate greatness:
- Redefine Greatness For Yourself – Are you comfortable letting the world decide if what you are and who you are measure up to their definition of greatness? Shouldn’t the unique individual that you are live by your own definition of greatness?
- Take Inventory – Once you’ve determined what your own definition of greatness is, how do you measure up? How much of your capacity for greatness is being used each day?
- Be Inspired – Come to appreciate all that you really are. Be humbly in awe of your talents, gifts, and abilities. You should be! When you truly understand all that you really are, you’ll develop a calming confident reverence for yourself and the world around you. Amazing things happen when capacity meets inspiration!
Living Half Full is understanding that greatness is not something to achieve. It is something to live up to. Your being great doesn’t make you better than anyone, nor anyone better than you. It’s not about arrogance or ego.
It is not something you become.
It is something you live up to.
The world needs you to be great!
Can we count on you?
It’s a great day to be you!
